Twisted Metal is a vehicular combat game developed by SingleTrac and released for the PlayStation console in 1995. The game features a variety of characters driving heavily armed vehicles in a deathmatch-style competition, with the goal of being the last one standing.
The game’s storyline revolves around Calypso, a mysterious figure who invites drivers to compete in the Twisted Metal competition with the promise of granting the winner’s greatest wish. Each driver has a unique backstory and motivation for competing in the tournament, which is revealed through cutscenes and interactions with other characters.
The gameplay in Twisted Metal involves using a variety of weapons and power-ups to destroy other vehicles, including missiles, machine guns, and flamethrowers. Each vehicle has its own strengths and weaknesses, with some being faster and more maneuverable while others are heavily armored and can absorb more damage.
The game features a number of different game modes, including a single-player campaign, a split-screen multiplayer mode, and an eight-player tournament mode. The game’s multiplayer mode was particularly popular, with players competing against each other in split-screen matches.
Twisted Metal was a commercial and critical success, selling over 1.4 million copies and receiving widespread praise for its innovative gameplay, diverse cast of characters, and atmospheric soundtrack. The game spawned several sequels and spin-offs, including Twisted Metal 2, Twisted Metal: Black, and Twisted Metal: Head-On, and is considered a classic of the vehicular combat genre.
