Counterfeit cards are a growing problem in the hobby. Knowing how to spot fakes protects your collection and your wallet.
The Light Test
Hold the card up to a bright light. Real trading cards have a dark middle layer that blocks most light. Fake cards often appear translucent.
Print Quality
Use a jeweler's loupe (10x magnification) to examine the rosette print pattern. Genuine cards show a consistent dot pattern. Fakes often have blurry or inconsistent printing.
Card Stock and Feel
Real cards have a specific thickness, flexibility, and texture. Compare a suspected fake against a known genuine card from the same set.
When buying high-value cards, always request detailed photos and consider only purchasing graded cards from reputable grading companies.
