Raw Card

Grading converts a seller's subjective condition description into a contractually authenticated numerical grade, which reduces buyer risk and unlocks marketplace floor pricing. Raw cards sell at a discount to compensate the buyer for taking on the authentication risk.

Grade when the expected post-grade value covers the grading fee plus a meaningful margin. For high-end modern rookie cards, refractors, and serial-numbered parallels, grading typically pays off. For vintage commons, low-grade vintage stars, and any card where grading fees exceed expected value, leave it raw.

Look for sellers who provide multiple high-resolution photos covering corners, edges, centering, and surface — and who accurately describe any defects (whitening, indentations, surface marks). Reputable sellers err on the side of stricter condition descriptions; a 'Near Mint' raw card from one seller may align with a different seller's 'Excellent.'
