Description
The Underdark Beholder stands as a formidable six-mana creature in the Magic: The Gathering universe, specifically highlighted in the 2019 Mystery Booster Playtest Cards series. As card number 49 in the CMB1 set, this rare release by artist Chris Tulach offers collectors a glimpse into experimental gameplay designs that did not make it to standard sets. The card’s mechanics center around ten eyestalk counters placed on the battlefield upon entry, which serve as a damage shield and fuel for a powerful spell-casting ability. Collectors of Magic: The Gathering trading card game cards often seek out Mystery Booster Playtest items for their historical significance in the game's design evolution. The Underdark Beholder’s ability to potentially cast instant, sorcery, or enchantment spells without paying their mana cost represents a unique interaction that fascinated players during playtesting phases. For those building a library of rare artifacts, this card provides a distinct piece of MTG history, separate from the mainline releases. The creature’s 6/6 power and toughness make it a significant presence on the battlefield, while its defensive capabilities add a layer of strategic depth.

Card Text
Abilities, attacks, oracle text, and flavor text printed on the card.
Underdark Beholder enters the battlefield with ten eyestalk counters on it. If Underdark Beholder would be dealt damage, remove that many eyestalk counters from it instead. If you can't, sacrifice it. Whenever Underdark Beholder attacks, reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal an instant, sorcery, or enchantment card with converted mana cost less than the number of eyestalk counters on Underdark Beholder. You may cast it without paying its mana cost. Shuffle your library.
